In 2018 Tesco posed us the challenge of ensuring consistent supply of high-quality British strawberries during peak demand windows such as Wimbledon. This began a journey to what 5 years on was the most advanced strawberry glasshouse in the UK and now produces c.1250t per annum with water use halved and carbon emissions per kilo down 67% vs. a traditional tunnel system.
And we’re not just thinking about Strawberries … we continuously seek and evaluate consumer asks as a foundation to "imagine tomorrow". Teams then work both on our own farms and with our strategic growing partners globally – to accelerate the quality and availability of our offer year after year.
We work hard to simplify the journey from farm to customer, prioritising packing at source and delivering directly to the Tesco depot whenever possible. Where this isn’t feasible, products are routed through one of our partner packing sites. Each site operates as a centre of excellence for its product category, with expert ripening, packing, and quality teams ensuring we deliver the best possible results.
